Champion wins bowling State crown

The eighth annual girls and boys state bowling tournaments began Friday at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl. This year, for the first time in the eight year history of the tournament, champions are being crowned in two divisions. The boys Division II championship began the state bowling tournament on Friday. Warren Champion defeated Struthers in the championship match to capture its school’s first boys bowling state championship with scores of 153-173-234-175-170. Coldwater, the 2012 boys bowling state champion, finished third while fellow Midwest Athletic Conference member Versailles finished fourth.

Members of the Golden Flashes State Champion squad include: Seniors Zach Zigmont, Danny Simmons, and Justin Cox.  Juniors: David Yenchocic,  Jared Gould, and Sammy Adya.  Sophomores: Joe Martin & Jake Fritch.

Struthers senior Dan Diloreto earned the individual championship by posting a total score of 678 and game scores of 243-201-234. He is the second individual champion from Struthers since 2011. Versailles senior Michael Davidson, the 2013 boys individual champion, finished ninth. Blake Spangler of Coldwater bowled the high single game individual score for the tournament with a 267.

The girls Division II championship will be held on Saturday, March 1 while the boys Division I tournament will be on Friday, March 7. The girls Division I championship will conclude the bowling tournaments on Saturday, March 8.
