Mathews Local School District employees file strike

VIENNA, Ohio (WKBN) — Barring a labor agreement resolution, Mathews Local School District will be going without some of its employees later this month.

On Monday, members of the district’s Ohio Association of Public School Employees Local No. 611 filed notice for a strike planned to begin March 14.

According to Mathews Local School District Superintendent Lew Lowery, the strike means the district will be without its custodians, bus drivers, and food service workers. The school will be open and functioning as normal, and the school will send parents instructions in a school newsletter on how to prepare their children in absence of the workers, Lowery said.

The Board of Education turned in a final offer to the OAPSE members Dec. 20, who rejected the proposal during a Feb. 19 meeting. The contract expired June 30.

The unresolved issues are mostly financial, according to a press release, and include severance pay, attendance incentive and summer work pay rate.
