Dr. Shayesteh: Why diets don’t work

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – When people want to lose weight, many turn to a diet. But most diets don’t work and Dr. Shayesteh explains why.

He said if diets worked, there would not be 136 million people in America who are overweight.

Dr. Shayesteh said diets don’t work because of the diet cycle, which consists of restriction, deprivation, craving, giving in and then guilt. He also said diets involve a temporary change in eating habits and as soon as a person goes back to their old ways, the weight comes back.

He said most people give up their favorite food as part of a diet, but that does not work because when the person gives in to their craving, it leaves them feeling guilty and depressed, which can lead to further bad eating. The other bad part of dieting is cutting back too much on calories, which causes the body to go into starvation mode and makes losing weight difficult.

Dieting also throws off a person’s metabolism and their sugar levels, both which lead to hunger and unnecessary eating.

Dr. Shayesteh said diets are only temporary and the best way to lose weight is not by eating less, but by eating smarter.
