School celebrates literacy and opens doors to community

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Youngstown Christian School celebrated literacy today by opening its doors to the entire community.

Now in its third year, the festivities coincided with the birthday of Dr. Seuss.

The first floor of the school was transformed into a circus-themed area based on the Seuss book, “If I Ran the Circus.”

Meanwhile, the second floor was decorated in a Hobbit theme for the older kids.

One of the organizers, Shelley Murray said this is the first year the event has been open to the public.

“We were pleasantly surprised at how much activity we have as far as people that are new to our building and we love sharing and learning. And we love sharing the activity with others, said Shelley Murray, Director of Institutional Advancement.

In addition to the reading, Murray said there were also science displays and activities.
