Tribune crowns spelling champion

WARREN TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) — The third time won’t be the charm for the reigning Tribune Chronicle spelling champ.

Elias Kondolios, 13, of Howland Middle School won this year’s spelling bee. He correctly spelled the word Croesus, which means a very rich man. Kondolios now goes on to the National Spelling Bee in Washington in May.

The runner-up was Rebecca Stanhope, 14, of Joseph Badger Middle School. She won the bee the past two years.

She slipped up on the word pizzicato, which is a note or passage played by plucking strings.
