Work resumes on old GE plant

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Work is under way again to get Youngstown’s century-old General Electric lamp plant ready to come down.

The project came to an abrupt halt late last week after Mahoning County Building inspectors learned some of the necessary construction and demolition permits had not been obtained. GE  still owns the property off Market Street and officials received the paperwork Friday afternoon.

Company executives said they are trying to deconstruct the building rather than demolish it, both to minimize any noise or dust in the neighborhood, as well as to salvage as much of the structure as they can.

The project should be finished by June so the property can be sold.
