CityScape revs up, planting day set

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Youngstown CityScape used the first full day of spring to kick off its 2014 program.

The annual event held at Mill Creek Park kicked off the group’s fundraising campaign.

The first project on the list is the Streetscape planting day scheduled for May 31. Volunteers will focus on the downtown area, removing debris and planting shrubs.

Director Sharon Letson said the project does more than just make a city look nice.

“How we look at the city is most important, I think, to anyone who might be visiting us or anyone who might be thinking about bringing a new business to town,” said Letson.

The focus areas include Wick Park, Federal Street and the police memorial.

Letson said at least 500 volunteers pitch in each year.
