College Baseball: YSU-Ohio meet today

The Youngstown State baseball team (2-14) will travel to Athens this afternoon to take on the Bobcats of Ohio at 4 PM. The Penguins trail the all-time series 22-10.

YSU began the season by dropping their first five contests before edging Appalachian State (2-1) on February 28. Since that victory, the Penguins have won just once over their last ten outings. Second year coach Steve Gillispie’s group has been outscored 144-61 in their 16 games.

Freshman outfielder Alex Larivee (Sacramento, CA) leads the team in batting average by hitting a .378 average with 9 runs scored, 17 hits and a slugging percentage of .444. Catcher Josh White (Eynon, PA) has accounted for 10 RBIs and 22 total bases.

Left Alex Frey (Washington, PA) has provided the Penguins with a solid start out of the bullpen. Frey has posted a 2.38 ERA in 11.1 innings of work. He’s struck out 11 batters and walked just three. Patrick O’Brien (Boardman, OH) and Brendon Shoemake (La Canada, CA) have both started three games and have compiled respective ERAs of 5.19 and 6.19 apiece.

Ohio enters the contest with a 4-16 mark and are still looking for their first win at home (0-6). The Bobcats have lost eight straight. Freshman outfielder Mitch Longo (Mayfield, OH) is averaging .411 from the dish with 2 homers and 13 runs batted in while belting a .589 slugging percentage. Sophomore right-hander Jake Miller (Westerville, OH) has pitched in six contests and has allowed 21 earned runs in 14.2 innings this season (12.89 ERA).
