$1M prize winner tells Ohio judge he’s broke

CINCINNATI (AP) – Within months of being awarded a $1 million casino prize, a Cincinnati man got busted for drugs and went broke.

Kevin Lewis, 52, received the money through a Horseshoe Casino giveaway last summer. Lewis told Hamilton County court officials on Wednesday that the money was gone, much of it to paying bills for other people, The Cincinnati Enquirer reported.

Common Pleas Judge Jerome Metz Jr. sentenced Lewis to three years of probation for his guilty pleas to drug possession and trafficking. He was arrested in December on charges of trafficking marijuana and painkillers. He could have been imprisoned for more than five years. Prosecutors dropped two of four counts in a plea agreement.

“I regret what I did,” Lewis told the judge. “But I take full responsibility.”

His attorney told the judge that Lewis was left disabled and hooked on painkillers after 2012 hip surgery. But the judge noted that Lewis had earlier drug convictions.

Besides probation, Metz ordered Lewis to get his high school equivalency degree and submit to drug and alcohol testing. He also suspended his driver’s license for two years.

Attorney Alvertis Bishop Jr. said Lewis had worked in inventory control for a downtown Cincinnati hotel before a hip replacement.
