Nothing happens overnight. How true that phrase is when describing the effort that goes into trying to change the culture of a program. Coach Eric Pellegrini enters his third season at the helm of East baseball. The Panthers have not won many games since the Youngstown City School District consolidated East and Chaney’s sports programs together. However, the Panthers have shown signs of improvement which begins with the patience and preparation that this coaching staff expects of its’ players. “Every day at practice, it’s great to see the interest that some of the players have in the game of baseball,” said Pellegrini. “It says a lot about the character of the players on the team that they are willing to show up every day and play a varsity sport that they have had limited exposure to.”

Coach Pellegrini says that each day is a learning experience for his young team. “We lost three-fourths of our infield. We have only one senior (Mohammad Mujahed) on the team. Still, we do return three starting pitchers, two starting outfielders and our catcher from last year. Our focus needs to be on improving. Whether in the field or at the plate, the next pitch is the only pitch that matters.”

The Panthers will rely on juniors Jeremy Woodberry, Brandon Jackson and sophomore Imoni Donadelle. Woodberry hit .256 (11-43) while tossing 19.1 innings (14 Ks) and leading the team with 24 defensive assists. Jackson batted the same number as Woodberry (.256) as he also threw 16.2 innings (15 Ks) and tallied 22 put outs on defense. Donadelle led the team with a 6.15 ERA (18.2 IP) while striking out 15 batters and garnering the team’s lone win a year ago (1-3).

This marks the first year that East will be a member of the All-American Conference. “Joining the AAC and playing a full varsity schedule will more challenging than in past years,” says Pellegrini. “(With that said) playing games on a more regular basis should lead to quicker improvement.”
