Once again, the Tigers were on the doorstep to a state championship last June when they were turned away in a competitive 2-1 loss to Newark Catholic. The loss marked the third of its’ kind in the past five seasons. Since falling to Fitch (6-0) and Poland (7-1) in back-to-back contests, Springfield ran off seven straight wins to emerge as one of the final two clubs to play in Division IV (Newark Catholic).

Springfield returns a bevy of talent including a large junior class who were on last year’s club including Dalton Donachie and Ryan Kohler. Donachie threw five or more innings in seven of his last eight starts. He also struck out six batters or more in seven of his twelve appearances on the hill. Kohler accumulated nine of his twenty stolen bases within his last eight games. At Huntington Park, Ryan went 6 of 9 (.750) with 4 runs scored.

Senior Joey Wrask returns as the team’s first baseman. Number 33 finished the season with an eight-game hit streak intact. Wrask was batting .500 during that stretch (14-28). Junior catcher Hunter Snyder is also back as one of the team’s leaders. Snyder caught 25% of the opposing would-be base runners. He also batted .345 (29-84) for the season and drove in 21 runs.

This evening, the 2014 season begins with a trip to Poland.
