YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Mahoning County Commissioners also are getting involved in Autism Awareness Month.
The board presented a pair of resolutions Wednesday afternoon to the Autism Society of Ohio and Autism Speaks. The proclamations helped kick start autism awareness in the Mahoning Valley during the month of April.
Local leaders said there’s a focus on the one in 68 children diagnosed with autism, but those kids still need services and care as they get older.
“So what we need to do is give that group of people the same community they had in their younger years and we need to give that elder parent the support they need to take care of their elder child,” said Susan Maruca, an Autism of Society board member.
“Hopefully the awareness snowballs and gets other people participating and donating, whether it be of their time, or their money, or their gifts,” said Mahoning County Commissioner David Ditzler.
A few downtown Youngstown buildings were participating in the international “Light it Up Blue” effort Wednesday evening, turning on blue lights to celebrate world autism awareness.
