On October 29, the Akron Aeros took on a new persona when the organization renamed the club to the RubberDucks, which refers the city’s rubber industry.
Last year, the Aeros finished fifth in the Eastern League’s Western Division standings with a 68-73 record, 8 ½ games behind the eventual champion, Harrisburg Senators. The franchise has won seven league titles (3 which were won when the club was located in Vermont as the Reds’ affiliate). Since the Aeros have been affiliated with the Indians in 1989, they’ve won four championships – all of which have been won in Akron.
This season, Akron will be led by Dave Wallace – who was the Scrappers’ skipper in 2011 (41-34). Another name on the staff who many in the area will remember is Rouglas Odor, who led Mahoning Valley in 2005 and 2006 (69-77).
MLB Network has the RubberDucks’ shortstop Francisco Lindor as Cleveland’s top prospect. Others listed in the top twenty are 6’4 pitcher Cody Anderson (4th), outfielder Tyler Naquin (5th), catcher Tony Wolters (9th), second baseman Joe Wendle (11th), utility infielder Ronny Rodriguez (13th), and left handed thrower Kyle Crockett (17th).
The Ducks begin their season tomorrow when they play at Binghamton (Mets) followed by a three-game stretch in Altoona (Curve). Akron returns to Canal Park next Thursday (April 10) when they meet the Bowie Baysox (Orioles).
