Lowellville basketball tournament raises funds for scholarship

LOWELLVILLE, Ohio (WKBN) — Close to 60 teams compete today in a basketball tournament.

To honor the memory of a child– and help a high school student pay for college.

The fifth annual “Have a Heart Ella Rose 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament” was held at Lowellville High School.

It’s in honor of Ella Rose Solak, who died from a congenital heart defect in 2010, when she was 20 months old.

Money raised will go towards a scholarship for a graduating senior at Lowellville High School.

Ella’s mother says each year, she gets a lot of support from local businesses, and the community.

“We get a lot of money in donations and we get a lot of volunteers.  We have a lot of relatives coming in, and just students — people who want to help out,” said Gina Solak, Ella’s mother.

Last year, organizers gave away $2,000 in scholarship money.
