Church rallies around family of shooting victim

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – An area church is reaching out to help a young girl hit by a stray bullet while sitting inside her home on Youngstown’s South Side last week.

Senior Pastor Lock Beachum Jr. and his wife Gloria Beachum were pretty excited after Sunday’s service. The pastor and some church members were heading to Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron to drop off a few items to 9-year old Kathryn Carter and her family.

“We got her a Build-A-Bear. She got Toys R Us (gift card), and we gave the family a gas card because they have been traveling back and forth from Akron,” said Beachum. “We also bought the family a gift card to go to Olive Garden, the Darden Group, so they can go to dinner together.”

Beachum said he was touched by the story and wanted to do something to help. He was able to get in contact with the family through Kathryn’s school principal.

The church was able to get all of the items through its Operation Impact Community Missions. Beachum said he and his wife Gloria stress the gift was a team effort.

“Our folk here at Victory at Liberty sow money into this particular category, and we have the opportunity as pastor and first lady to go out into the community and impact the community with these finances,” said Beachum.

“It is all for our Kingdom. We are just happy that we have an opportunity to give back when there is a need in the community. Just an opportunity to give back,” said Gloria Beachum.

Beachum and two of his church members made the trip to Akron Sunday afternoon.

“It is just a way for us to reach out and say this is Jesus’ love. Jesus’ love is not connected to who you know,” said Beachum.

Police are still investigating the shooting. No suspects have been charged.
