Girard fire considered suspicious

GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) — An investigation is under way after a suspicious fire Monday morning at a home in Girard.

The fire broke out in a back room of the Davis Street home of Debra Hoschar just after 10 a.m. Firefighters said it was a hot one to battle and it was fortunate no one was home at the time.

The fire chief said it’s suspicious because of where the fire broke out and the time of day it started, as well as witness statements that suggest someone was seen running away from the home before the fire started.

Hoschar’s nephew said they are devastated by the fire since the home has been in their family for years.

“Everything, they said there is nothing in there. The house had a room that nobody was even using. It had pictures, just stuff that was hers that were left from her mom, my great aunt,” said David Miller Jr. “Who would want to do this? I mean everybody looks out for one another. They say they have witnesses and I just hope whoever it is they bring justice, you know.”

The state fire marshal will help investigate.
