Mahoning County teens honored for service

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) – Mahoning County teenagers were honored Tuesday night for giving back to their community.

The Town Crier hosted its inaugural “20 Under Twenty” awards at The Georgetown Banquet Center in Boardman. Also sponsoring the event were the Tribune Chronicle, Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley and Parent Magazine.

School guidance counselors, principals and youth group leaders nominated students. Those selected had to excel in community service, extracurricular activities and academics.

Organizers said the goal of the program is to grow leaders of tomorrow from a young age.

“We just feel that it’s important to be part of the community and it’s important to encourage youth to participate in community service and encourage leadership,” said Sue Shafer, community events coordinator for the Town Crier newspapers.

Students in Trumbull County were honored with the 20 Under Twenty awards in December.

Cardinal Mooney High School senior Murphy Sharp took home the top prize on Monday, winning $500 for the non-profit organization of her choice. She created Project Uganda to help raise money to build water wells in Uganda, which she got involved in through her parish, St. Christine.

Sharp is a member of the Cardinal Mooney Link Crew, the drama club and the speech team.
