Neighbors in fear after home invasion in Warren

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) – The city of Warren went almost 100 days this year without a homicide. Monday night, a man died and a woman was injured in a home invasion.

The 911 call reveals the panic and fear in the voice of one of the victims. A frantic Lisa Prater pleads with the 911 operator for help.

911: What is your emergency?

Prater: We got shot! We got shot! He is dying. He is going to die if you don’t get here soon.

Prater was able to give details about happened to operator.

Prater: I don’t know. They came in the door trying to rob us.

Warren police say two intruders came to the house in the 900 block of South Street last night. Several shots were fired at Prater and James Levels. Levels died, Prater is in the hospital.

“Don’t know what the motive was at this point,” said Lieutenant Jeff Cole.

Evelyn Milleson lives two doors away from where the shooting happened. She heard a bang but initially thought it was thunder.

“Two ambulances pulled up by our house and one stayed for a long time. I said that is not a good sign,” said Milleson.

Investigators need to talk with Prater to get a better idea of what happened and possible suspects. The 911 call doesn’t give police a lot to go on.

Prater: Two white boys, two white boys.

911: Two white boys?

Prater: Yeah, they were walking.

Milleson says she never met Levels and had little interaction with Prater. She adds sometimes there was a lot of activity at the house. Both victims have criminal pasts, including drug charges.

“It is a bad drug house, prostitution, drugs, and it just never stops,” said Milleson.

Another neighbor said she has seen police at the house a number of times. Police reports indicate two incidents, one for menacing and the other for felonious assault.

“It is not one of those houses that just stands out to me, to the detective bureau,” said Cole.

Milleson is hoping the house will be torn down.

“I have been here almost ten years and it just keeps getting worse,” said Milleson. “I won’t even walk down to the bakery.”
