Training keeps K-9 teams on the ready

NORTH LIMA, Ohio – (WKBN) – The Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office and a Pennsylvania kennel are teaming up to keep K-9 handlers up to date on their commands and skills for the animals.

A seminar is under way to help teach both the handler and dog techniques in building and area searches, narcotic finds and many other valuable, specialized lessons.

Training is being attended by 50 K-9 units from the area and across the Buckeye state.

The seminar also gives handlers and their K-9’s an opportunity to network and share information on their specialized fields.

“It is very important for everybody to come here and put their dogs in situations that they might encounter in the street, so at least they have an idea of how they want to handle it,” said Deputy Jeff Saluga.

The workshop will run every day through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Different venues will be utilized including the Canfield Fairgrounds.
