Six Warren firefighters laid off

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — Layoff notices went out Monday to six Warren firefighters.

The firefighters are employed under a federal SAFER grant. City officials said they received notification last week from FEMA officials that their grant application was denied.

Originally, 21 firefighters worked under the grant, but most left and took employment elsewhere.

“You have to realize this is a grant funded position and there is a strong possibility that if the grant does not get renewed or a new one is not secured, the position would not be funded going forward,” said Warren Safety-Service Director Enzo Cantalamessa.

Two other firefighters hired under the grant will be kept on to replace two retiring firefighters.
