YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Several members of the Youngstown Road Runners Club are heading east to participate in the 2014 Boston Marathon.
The training, hard work, and excitement of participating in the race are all driving forces, but the thought of the tragic events of last year’s attack at the race is something that is on the runners’ mind.
Tammy McFarland and Amy Pagac are both excited to be running in the 118th Boston Marathon. They both agree that last year’s bombing provided motivation during their difficult training.
“There is fear in the back of my mind,” said Pagnac. “There is also I want to be there more now.”
“You think about that a lot during training because training isn’t always easy, especially this time of year,” said McFarland. “This winter it was terrible outside, but you think about what everybody went through last year, and it makes it a bit easier. What you are going through isn’t as bad.”
Kevin Guthrie said he is even more motivated to run the marathon this year. “It is not going to stop me from running,” he said.
Marathon officials have been sending the runners e-mails about increased security and what to expect.
“I am going to go for all the runners and for everybody that was there last year,” said McFarland.
