STRUTHERS, Ohio (WKBN) — It is Easter week and area residents are heading out to buy an Easter staple: Giannios chocolate.
The local chocolate maker, which started in a Struthers basement, is known nationwide.
On Wednesday, the store was filled with people stocking up for the holiday. The store offers everything from Easter eggs to chocolate pretzels and even a 20-pound chocolate bunny.
Company president John Giannios said they will continue to make candy until Saturday.
“Usually we are scrambling to get everything made after the Christmas holiday, but this year we have had a few extra weeks and it was really comfortable. Fifty percent of our sales is the Easter holiday so the four weeks around Easter. Twenty-five percent is Christmas and 25 percent is every day business,” Giannios said.
He also said business is up 12 percent so far this year compared to last year.
“Business has been really good. A lot of people will buy their chocolate early because Easter is coming and then sometimes people will eat it and then come back for more,” Giannios said.
One of the reasons for the uptick is the continued support of the Mahoning Valley.
“It tastes good, that is it. I would not come here if it was not a good quality product. But after that, I think it is important to support local. We try to go to local restaurants, do whatever we can to support local,” said John Venglarcik of Poland.
The store will be having its annual half-off sale throughout the day Sunday. Giannios said people will start lining up outside at 4 a.m. The store will be open until 4 p.m.
