Penguins drop pair to Wright State

The Youngstown State softball team tallied just eight hits on the day and dropped a pair of Horizon League games to Wright State, 5-3 and 2-0, on Friday afternoon at the YSU Softball Field.

The Penguins, who fall to 21-19 overall and 6-6 in the Horizon League, could not capitalize on six Wright State errors and left nine runners stranded on base in the opener.

After scoring an unearned run in the top of the second inning, Wright State (13-26, 8-4 Horizon League), added two in the third and two more in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead after five.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Penguins threatened with bases loaded and no outs. Sophomore Katie Smallcomb’s base-loaded fielder’s choice scored Courtney Ewing, who went 2-for-4, when Wright State’s Kortney Tackett pulled her foot off home plate early.

Wright State pitcher Krystian DeWitt then Samantha Snodgrass and Haley Knight grounded into a double play for end the Penguins’ threat.

Kayla Haslett led off the bottom of the seventh with a single through the left side, and freshman Maria Lacaenta belted a two-run home run to left field to get the Penguins within two, 5-3.

Ewing reached on an error and was safe at second on Miranda Castiglione’s fielder’s choice when WSU shortstop Becka Peterson pulled her foot off the bag to early.

After a strikeout and another error loaded the bases, DeWitt induced a game-ending fielder’s choice to lock down the 5-3 win.

In the nightcap, Haslett was the hard-luck loser allowing just six hits, but giving up a two-out, two-strike triple to Jess Gorman in the top of the seventh inning.

The Penguins mustered just two hits, both singles by Ewing and Knight.

The Penguins and Raiders close out the series, Saturday, April 19, at Noon.
