Howland Fatal Fire, kills 80-year-old woman

HOWLAND TOWNSHIP, Ohio (WKBN) – A second person has died as a result of a house fire early Wednesday in Howland.

The Howland Fire Department said Richard Noble died late Thursday morning at the burn unit at Akron Children’s Hospital. His mother, Naomi Jean Smith, 80, died in the fire that broke out at 5 a.m. Wednesday at 7582 Pegotty Drive N.E.

When crews arrived at the house, heavy smoke was pouring from the garage area.

Noble, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, suffered severe smoke inhalation, firefighters said. Smith was found dead in a bedroom.

There were working smoke detectors in the home, which is a duplex, firefighters said.
