Pep rally preps students for tests

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — A pep rally was held Friday in at West Elementary School in Boardman to get students excited for the Ohio Achievement Tests.

Based on the rallies that are usually held for school athletic teams, the event featured “silly” videos of teachers as rock stars and dancers.

Dean Wilson, music specialist for elementary schools, said the rally was just as much for the staff as the students.

“It’s two-fold in purpose. We’re going to have some fun. We’re going to break the ice because everybody, mostly the staff, are very tense right now about our success on this test. There’s a lot at stake,” said Wilson.

Wilson added that not only will the tests help to determine the school’s rating, it also will in the future play a role in teacher pay.
