Girard police catch robbery suspect

GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) – Before he was arrested on suspicion of robbing a bank here on Saturday, a Youngstown man stopped at a popular restaurant.

Robert T. Naples is jailed on charges that he robbed the Charter One Bank on State Street about 11 a.m. He was captured after a lengthy foot chase that involved multiple police departments.

Before that, though, the 42-year-old stopped at the Jib-Jab restaurant asking about bus schedules, according to police. It’s not known if he got a bus schedule, as he left the eatery on foot, police said.

Bank employees told police the suspect didn’t show them a weapon but did tell them he had a gun, the report states. One of the employees opened the cash drawer and hit the alarm. That’s when the suspect took an undisclosed number of $50 bills and left.

The foot chase included the area of Morris Avenue S.E., crossed Interstate 80, went through a wooded area and down to Trumbull Avenue.

A Liberty police officer eventually caught Naples at the route 711 northbound ramp about 12:20 p.m.

Naples appeared in Girard Municipal Court on Monday. He pleaded not guilty and bond was set at $75,000.
