‘Beezin’ craze can injure eyes

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – Teenagers are finding new ways to get high and this time it’s by applying lip balm to the skin around their eyes.

It’s called “beezin,” named after the brand Burt’s Bees. Users say that it intensifies the feeling of being high or drunk.

Health officials say the peppermint oil in the lip balm increases tear production, causes swelling to the sensitive areas around the eyes and could cause some dangerous medical conditions.

“The appeal of using this lip balm towards the eye is because of the permeability, it being very instant,” said Certified Nurse Practitioner Tammy Todd with Minute Clinic. “It can cause a buzz to occur in young children.”

Anyone who has tried “beezin” and experiences pain or redness should seek medical attention.
