Howland woman returning to death row

HOWLAND, Ohio (WKBN) — A Howland woman is headed back to death row after she was re-sentenced Wednesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Donna Roberts was sentenced to death for the third time by Judge Ronald Rice. Roberts was originally ordered to death row after she was convicted in 2001 of conspiring with her boyfriend to murder her husband, Robert Fingerhut.

Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court denied an appeal from Roberts, arguing she should be allowed to offer evidence as to why she should not receive the death penalty.

Woman will be sentenced a third time in death.

“We are very hopeful that this will quickly bring an end to this case and certainly an end to Miss Roberts’ life as a jury determined well over 10 years ago,” said Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Christopher Becker.

Roberts is the only woman on Ohio’s death row.
