YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) – A Central Committee race on Youngstown’s West Side is heating up and one challenger is calling foul over some campaign literature sent out by the Mahoning County Democratic Party.
Don L. Hanni, III filed a complaint Friday with the Mahoning County Board Elections over a flyer that went out claiming that his challenger, John A. Palermo, is endorsed by the Mahoning County Democratic Party Central Committee candidate for precinct 5L.
With Attorney David Engler acting as his counsel, Hanni filed the complaint stating the campaign literature suggests Palermo has been endorsed by the party when in fact the party does not make endorsements in central committee races, according to the complaint.
The complaint alleges that the campaign literature is “false and misleading.”
“This guy is going to do everything he can to muddy the waters,” said Hanni.
Hanni is asking that Betras personally pay for a flyer to be sent out immediately clarifying the mistake.
“You can’t spend this money and mislead the public; don’t do that,” said Engler.
Ken Carano, Mahoning County Democratic Party’s executive vice chairman, said the whole issue is “much ado about nothing.” He said Hanni has the right to file whatever complaint he wants to but there is no wrong doing on the part of the Mahoning County Democratic Party.
