YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — The yearly training courses for new firefighters are under way in Youngstown.
A home on Philadelphia Avenue, which is on the city demolition list, was chosen as the site of the second live fire training for the class. Before it was set on fire, the fire department made sure the home did not have toxic substances inside.
Fire officials said interest in joining the fire department is as high as ever.
“We have 11 recruits going through their firefighter certifcation and this is one of their live burn evolutions here. It’s so competitive that you have to have this course to even get the job because there is so many people that have the certification,” said Youngstown Fire Department Battalion Chief Jimmy Drummond.
The first live fire training was held on the North Side last week.
