GIRARD, Ohio (WKBN) — Officials in Liberty are looking for some solutions after the latest water line break left a chunk of the township’s business corridor without service.
Girard Water Department Service Director Jerry Lambert said a line coupling snapped around 6:30 a.m. Friday, affecting a couple hundred customers in the area of Belmont Avenue and Churchhill Road. Water to that area is provided by the Girard Water Department and while the break was fixed in less than an hour, officials said the problem happens far too often.
“Once in a while, you can have water problems. Once in a while. But it can’t be frequently. So I think that trustees would like to get together with the county commissioners, look at the opportunities,” said Liberty Township Administrator Pat Ungaro.
Ungaro said he would like to look into tying into another water department, such as Youngstown, to provide a backup whenever the current system breaks down.
In the meantime, Friday morning’s problems proved very costly to the Hampton Inn on Belmont Avenue. Because of a company policy guaranteeing customer satisfaction, local operators had to refund every customer who stayed at the hotel overnight since they were without water when waking up.
