Event held to find bone marrow match

LIBERTY, Ohio (WKBN) – A Liberty man diagnosed with blood cancer is hoping he can find a bone marrow match here in the Valley.

David Benigas was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome in December.

The former Mahoning County Sheriff’s deputy is in need of a bone marrow transplant.

Family and friends organized a marrow donor registry drive and fundraiser Saturday to help him find a match. They also brought in the Be the Match.org registry to help with their search for a donor. David is now on the registry.

The national registry helps patients find donors from all across the country.

“The more people we have that come, that agree to get on the list to be swabbed, the better off we are, the better chance we are to have a match,” said Benigas.

Benigas’ sister, Patty Adams, said the goal was to get 75 people swabbed.

The event also included a bake sale, 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction.
