YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A number of people who wanted to express their thoughts on the hiring of Jim Tressel as Youngstown State University’s next president Friday took to social media to do so, and many were positive in their outlook for the Tressel era.
“Awesome! Welcome back Tressel, we are glad to have u [sic] back at YSU!” Cassie Simpson said on Twitter.
While most of the reaction was positive, it was not all that way.
“Youngstown State has offered Jim Tressel it’s [sic] President position. I guess he is a proven leader on the gridiron but what about the classroom.” Robert Bondy said on Twitter.
Friday was the last day of final exams on the Youngstown State campus. Many students were rushing to finals, enjoying the nice weather, and getting ready to leave for summer break.
Tressel verbally accepted the position Friday morning. Details of a contract between Tressel and the school were not immediately announced.
“I think that it’s a pretty good fit,” freshman Libby Urig said. “He seems to really want collaboration and teamwork, which I think is a really great virtue in a president.”
Tressel was the only one of the three finalists for the YSU job without a Ph.D.
“I’m a little disappointed,” YSU graduate student Elizabeth Pugh said. “I was hoping it was someone with a little bit more of an academic background for the university, but I’m sure that they had the university’s best interests at heart.”
