Facial hair competition raises money in Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — If you were in downtown Youngstown Saturday evening, you probably saw a lot of men with beards.

The Rust Belt Whisker Society held a facial hair competition at Suzie’s Dogs and Drafts.

There were more than 10 different categories in the contest– and you didn’t even have to grow your own facial hair.

In addition to the men’s natural and styled categories for various types of facial hair, kids could make their own “creative” beards and women could “craft” theirs out of different materials.

The men’s contests were judged on hair density, shape, detail… And of course, how well you wear it.

But it wasn’t all fun and games. This was a contest with a message.

“We want to encourage people to grow it and be accepting of it in the workplace, day to day. And that’s the whole idea of putting a club together. Get a bunch of like-minded people together, doing good in the community. Raising funds for summit academy. That kind of stuff,” said Anthony Fonts, organizer for the Rust Belt Whisker Society.

They held a 50-50 raffle and a gift item raffle with donations from more than a dozen local businesses.

All the money that raised from that went to Summit Academy.
