NILES, Ohio (WKBN) – There are several new hotels that are under construction in the Valley or about to open, and more hotels could be checking into the area in the near future.
Crews are busy getting the new Residence Inn at the Eastwood Mall ready for its May 29 opening. It is one of several hotels that have popped up in recent years. Dave Mangus, area director for TMI Hospitality, said they have already started booking rooms.
“Northeast Ohio is kind of in a big boom,” said Mangus. “We haven’t seen this in a long, long time.”
The need for more hotel rooms began with the oil and gas industry and has spun off from there with suppliers for the steel mills.
“There are a lot of industries that have the need for extended housing for their business people,” said Joe Bell, director of corporate communications with the Cafaro Company. “We are talking about people who are here training for sales or what have you.”
Last year, Trumbull County brought in about $810,000 in bed tax. That is $31,000 more than in previous years.
In the first four months of 2014, the bed tax is down by roughly $10,000, but that could change once the racino opens in Austintown later this year.
Mangus adds that when the convention center area of the hotel opens, it will give the county something it hasn’t had in about ten years.
“It will give us the ability to house some national conferences. You are going to get a lot of groups coming in here with the seating capabilities which is going to fill up the hotels which is going to fill up your restaurants which will get your retail moving,” said Mangus.
Bell said the Cafaro Company is in preliminary talks to build another hotel in the area.
