YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A Youngstown company recently received a big honor.
Hudson Fasteners, Inc. was given the Jeffrey Butland Family-Owned Business of the Year Award from the U.S. Small Business Administration. The company held a press conference announcing its award on May 13 at the Youngstown Business Incubator.
Hudson Fasteners President and CEO Lisa Kleinhandler said the company was founded in 1946 by her grandfather on the Hudson River in New York City. She said her grandfather was talked into going into the fastener distribution business by her uncle, who started Brooklyn Nut and Bolt in 1936.
She said her father, Eugene Kleinhandler, took over the business from his father. When Eugene was ready to retire, he asked his four daughters if any of them would like to take it over and Kleinhandler said yes. That is when the company was about 50 years old.
So how did she end up in Youngstown?
“I have learned never to question the journey in life,” Kleinhandler said.
She said her parents took their retirement out this way and her dad had been involved in a serious car crash in England. Some relatives in this area suggested Eugene and his wife move to this area because the cost of living was less expensive.
She said five years ago, her father’s health was failing and she wanted to spend time with him, so she decided to move the business to Youngstown.
Hudson Fasteners is a portfolio company of the Youngstown Business Incubator.
