Poland teacher agrees to suspension after allegedly showing inappropriate film

POLAND, Ohio (WKBN) — A Poland teacher signed an agreement to a two-year suspension Monday after allegedly showing an inappropriate video to students in a sixth-grade social studies class at McKinley Elementary School in the spring of 2013.

All but 60 days of the suspension were stayed, meaning the teacher received pay and worked as normal since the incident. The teacher will serve the 60-day suspension this summer starting June 12. A report was filed in September of 2013.

The video, entitled “Pompeii — Life and Death in a Roman Town,” contains content of a sexual nature that was “not age-appropriate for the class,” according to the agreement.

Poland Schools Superintendent David Janofa said he did not know if the teacher would receive pay during the suspension.

“We dealt with it and this is the result,” Janofa said. “Our expectation is our teachers would know better, and this is unacceptable and unfortunate.”
