Greenville senior center gets state funding

GREENVILLE, Pa. (WKBN) — The Greenville Senior Community Center in Mercer County was among 36 senior centers across Pennsylvania to receive more than $2 million in senior community center grants.

The Greenville facility received $83,500.

“Senior community centers play a vital role in helping older Pennsylvanians stay healthy and enable them to remain living in their homes and communities,” Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett said in a news release. “These grants provide opportunities for these centers to revitalize and expand their services to enrich the lives of individuals.”

The grant awards will advance senior community center projects to modernize facilities, encourage technology improvements, expand innovative programming, and help to meet the needs of their participants.

“As our older adult population continues to grow, it is important for senior community centers to be effective resources in engaging our older adults to live and age well,” Secretary of Aging Brian Duke said in the release. “These grants will assist centers in enhancing programming, attracting new members and building on successful practices. We are grateful to be able to offer them an opportunity to prepare for the future.”

Senior community centers serve as a resource for older adults in obtaining services to help individuals stay healthy and independent. Centers offer a wide variety of programs and services that may include healthy and nutritious meal programs, enrichment programs, educational opportunities, transportation services, financial and insurance counseling, and social and recreational activities.
