Youngstown council discusses roof coverage amendment

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Residents who have noticed several blue roof tarps on houses around Youngstown may be seeing less of them soon.

In a city council safety committee meeting Thursday night, members discussed amending an ordinance concerning roof coverage. The issue was how long property owners keep temporary coverings on their roofs.

Owners can use alternative coverings for temporary repair. But now the task is to get everyone on the same page.

“Just to get people to not use tarps as a permanent fix,” said Youngstown 7th Ward Councilman John Swierz.

Swierz said Friday that residents are tired of seeing the tarps as permanent fixes for various problems. City Council wants to put a time limit on the practice.

Swierz expects City Council to pass legislation at a June 4 meeting that would limit tarp use to 45 days
