2014 MLB Draft Preview

2014 Major League Baseball Draft

Pitching will once again be a strength at the top half of the first round in this Thursday’s Major League Baseball First-Year player draft. Houston will have their choice of arms as left hander Brady Aiken of Cathedral Catholic High School in California has emerged as one of the front runners to be the top pick. If Aiken goes first, he will become the third lefty to be chosen first since 1992. Other lefties Carlos Rondon (NC State) and Kyle Freeland (Evansville) seem to be obvious choices for teams’ picking in the upper half of the top 10. Right handers Aaron Nola (LSU) and Tyler Koleck (Shepherd High School in Texas) also appear to be locks to be chosen within the first hour of the selection process.

The Astros will choose first for the third time in as many years. Houston is now tied with the Mets and Padres for making the most first overall selections. The Marlins, who are choosing second, will make their highest pick since 2000 when Florida took Adrian Gonzalez first. Going back even further the White Sox will make their highest pick since 1977 at the third spot. In 1977, they chose Harold Baines first overall. The Cubs will be making their fourth top 10 pick in as many years. Selecting fifth, the Twins will make their third straight top five choice.

The Indians will choose 21st while the Bucs will pick three choices later (24th).
