2014 Pirates Draft Preview

Pittsburgh Pirates Draft Preview

Draft Notes
The Bucs will make five picks in the first 100. Pittsburgh’s first choice will come at 24. This will be the latest that the Pirates will make their first round selection since 1991 when they took catcher Jon Farrell at 24. Over the last decade, the Bucs have hit on first round choices like Gerrit Cole (in 2011), Pedro Alvarez (in 2008), Andrew McCutchen (in 2005) and Neil Walker (in 2004).

With much of their last two draft’s still developing in their farm system, the Pirates will look to choose from a bevy of talented prospects like Monte Harrison (OF/Lee’s Summit West High School), Casey Gillaspie (1B/Wichita State), or Derek Fisher (OF/Virginia). Will they choose an experience college player or will they go on potential of a high schooler? Time will tell. Over the weekend, general manager Neal Huntington traded away reliever Bryan Morris to the Marlins for the 39th choice in this draft.
