K-9 joins Trumbull County fire unit

WARREN, Ohio (WKBN) — Trumbull County has a new tool when it comes to arson investigations.

Trace, a black Labrador Retriever, is the newest member of the Trumbull County Fire Investigation Unit. Trace was paid for by State Farm Insurance.

Her trainer, Tom Dome, said he had to undergo 200 hours of training with Trace. When Trace believes she has hit on an arson point, she will sit down.

“Arson in all areas throughout the United States right now is on the rise. It is a crime a lot of people out there don’t realize how much of a crime it is. But our main goal is to try and go out there and get those arsonists off the street and make it safer for everybody in the community,” Dome said.

Trace already has been putting her nose to the test. On Wednesday morning, she was out investigating a vacant house fire in Kinsman.
