WARREN, Ohio (WKBN)– Hundreds turned out to receive free medical and dental care Saturday at One Health Ohio’s Lloyd McCoy Health Center. It’s put on by the center and MedWorks – a non-profit that helps provide medical services free to Ohio’s uninsured and underinsured
“Dental is one of the largest unmet needs in the country,” said Dr. Chris McCord, Lloyd McCoy Community Health Center Dentist.
McCord works at the Lloyd McCoy Health Center in Warren. He’s part of a team of dentists providing patients with free dental care.
“Today is mainly extractions or dental evaluations, someone has a sore tooth that’s been bugging them for a long time today’s the day to come in and let us take it out if they want,” said McCord.
It’s part of a one-day clinic put on by One Health Ohio and MedWorks. Officials with both organizations say even with the Affordable Care Act – the need for dental services is high, because most folks are either uninsured or under-insured. Of the roughly 160 patients signed up for appointments at the clinic, 120 were seeking help with their teeth.
“We saw our dental appointments went immediately,” said Carrie Clark, executive director for MedWorks.
“This is just a tremendous event. I’ve talked to patients here who haven’t seen doctors and dentists in years. It’s a way for them to get unconditional care,” said Robert Padgett, Human Resources Director for One Health Ohio.
“With the Affordable Care Act, there’s no mention of dental so we have a team of dentists here today providing dental care. We’re doing some extractions so yes the need is still really great,” said Clark.
MedWorks Executive Director Carrie Clark says these free clinics are important because it gives patients a place where they can come back and see a dentist regularly.
