AUSTINTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — Nearly 2,000 people submitted applications for 400 positions at the new racino in Austintown, which is set to open in the fall.
Penn National Gaming is holding a job fair until 8 p.m. Monday at the former Fashion Bug store in the Austintown Plaza. A second one will be held June 25 at Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Ave. in Youngstown.
The job fairs are open to the public, but applicants must first apply online in order to attend. To apply, click here. Approximatley 65 percent of the jobs are full-time, and the rest are part-time.
Applications will not be accepted at Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course.
The first person in line said he got there at 7 a.m. and hopes to do something behind the scenes.
“I worked two years at Heinz Field, so I have a lot of customer service experience there,” said Rick Marcolini of Niles.
“This is a great opportunity. I feel that with my experience in security, I am trying to get a security job. And it would be awesome if I could get that,” said Michael Taylor of Austintown.
Racino general manager Mike Galle said Monday’s group interviews are like auditions, and the next step is a casting call.
“Which is a group interview, but it gets much more detailed. And then if they pass that, what they will do is go meet one-on-one with the hiring manager themselves,” Galle said.
Derrick McKinney of New Middletown said he has never been to a group interview that was so well organized.
So what is the casino looking for in its employees?
“We’re looking for the right attitude and the right player service skills. And we’ll train all the technical skills,” Galle said.
Training is set to begin in July.
Carissa Taylor of Garrettsville said she was just looking for something new and was not particular about which job she gets.
“Cashier, the players area, customer service,” she said.
She said the application process was easier than she thought it would be.
“I was with a company for 16 years and they actually sold and moved to China, so I have been kind of hopping around for the past year and I would like to find something permanent and something I could depend on,” Taylor said.
