EAST LACKAWANNOCK TOWNSHIP, Pa. — It is suspected that a cardiac episode caused the death of a Hermitage driver early Tuesday morning.

Pennsylvania State Police said Jeffrey Coupland, 47, was driving a 2002 Toyota Solara east on U.S. Route 62 when his vehicle crossed into oncoming traffic, side swiped a guide rail and then traveled down an embankment before hitting a tree. Police said Coupland traveled along the guardrail for more than 39 feet and slid down the embankment more than 120 feet before hitting the tree.

Police said his car bounced off the tree and spun counter clockwise, coming to rest 2 feet away from it.

After being transported to Grove City Medical Center, Coupland was pronounced dead at 6:10 a.m.
