Niles Funeral Director sentenced for theft


Warren, Ohio (WKBN) – Former Niles funeral home director Robert McDermott was sentenced to 3 years in prison. McDermott plead guilty to stealing $280,000 in pre-need funeral money. He also must pay restitution in the amount of $172,000 for the money he stole.

McDermott apologized for what happened. McDermott says there was no intent to harm anyone.

Several Victims testified against McDermott during sentencing saying he took advantage of them in their time of need.

A spokesperson for the Ohio Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors testified saying McDermott has hurt the entire industry.
