Grant for Akron Children's Hospital to fight childhood obesity

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) — Efforts to deal with the growing problem of childhood obesity are getting a big boost from a local charity.

Leaders with the William Swanston Charitable Fund presented a $150,000 grant to Akron Childrens Hospital Mahoning Valley on Thursday morning. The funds will cover the costs of programming for at-risk youngsters in the area, as well as some of the conditions linked to obesity, such as diabetes and high cholesterol.

The gift for Akron Children’s Hospital is actually one of several being donated through the Swanston Fund, totaling nearly nearly $400,000 this year.
