LISBON, Ohio (WKBN) — Don Clark first knew something was wrong Wednesday when he heard a loud bang.
I gathered my wife and my grandson..We went to an interior hallway and i just huddled over them,” Clark, from Lisbon, said. “And it was over.”
He quickly realized the old maple on the side of his house had fallen onto the roof..leaving huge holes over the bedroom and bathroom..
“I ran up the street and saw a tree company with the type of equipment, crane and what have you, that you need,” Clark said. “And i just showed them my house and they said ‘you’re next.'”
In the hours following the storm..would-be repair crews literally descended on the damaged neighborhood…
“We had people roaming up and down the streets, handing out flyers, handing out cards,” said Tami Walker of Lisbon. “You know, ‘Do you have somebody already?’ Here, we can do this, we can do that.”
The storm pushed an old oak tree onto Walker’s father’s house, smashing into a second floor bedroom.
Don’s insurance agent recommended the local Servpro office which sent a team to cover the holes in his roof and start drying up the water damage. Servpro Representative Katie Bacorn said residents need to beware and ask for credentials.
“Make sure that they are IICRC certified, which is our industry standard,” Bacorn said. “It stands for ‘Institute for Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification.”
But others also say there needs to be a level of comfort.
“I wouldn’t think you’d pick the first person that…comes along and hands you a card or something,” said contractor Al Holenchick. “I think that you want to know somebody, and like I said, trust them.”
In the meantime, Walker worries that hiring the wrong person could cause problems later.
“That’s it. They could be in here, casing the place out, you know, to come back later at night when nobody’s home,” Walker said.
