LORAIN, Ohio (AP) – Authorities say three workers have been taken to a hospital following an explosion at a steel plant in northeast Ohio.
The explosion at the Republic Steel plant in Lorain, west of Cleveland, occurred about 8:30 a.m. Monday.
Emergency crews said it started with a water leak and then a cold piece of metal fell into a furnace and caused some type of explosion.
A fire department dispatcher said three people were hurt, but a Lorain County ambulance services official said the injuries were not life-threatening.
Republic Steel in April agreed to pay a $2.4 million fine for safety and health violations at four plants, including the one in Lorain, brought by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The plant had been remodeled and reopened within the past year after a long shutdown.
