Tree planted in memory of former news director

BOARDMAN, Ohio (WKBN) —  A tree was planted Monday at the WKBN station in honor of our former news Director Gary Coursen, who died in December from cancer.

WKBN General Manager Dave Coy, assistant news director Kristen Hephner, and Coursen’s wife Becky helped plant the tree in Coursen’s memory. His daughters Sally and Julia also were in attendance.

Coursen was diagnosed with cancer last summer. It was centered around his nasal area and moved into his brain. Surgery to remove the cancer initially was a success, but Coursen went into a coma and passed away in December at the age of 55.

Coursen worked in television news for over 30 years and was the architect of the 2007 merger of the WKBN and WYTV news departments. Before serving as our news director, Coursen was a photographer at the station.
